Frequently Asked Questions

1. Question: What can I Carve or engrave with the Turbo Carver?
Answer: The Turbo Carver will cut into almost any materials depending on the type of bur used. The Turbo Carver is commonly used for Ostrich eggs, gun stocks, wooden furniture, technical machinery and metal parts for de burning, lettering or marking, knife blades, bone, glass, mirrors, stone, quartz, Scrimshaw, any many more uses.

2. Question: Why use air power not electricity?
Answer: The force of an air compressor upon the turbine, which drives the dental bur, offers speeds hundreds of times faster than electric tools. The high speed offers little or no torque. This makes the tool virtually still as it carves, or engraves. Turbo Carver spins at 400,000 rpm.

3. Question: Which tool would be best for me- water spray or a regular carver?
Answer: Both carvers are great. The water mist is unique to the Turbo Carver. You may use it with or without water. With the water mist you will be ready to carve, engrave, or etch in glass or stone without as much concern about heat which decreases the life of your bur. The water mist greatly decreases dust from softer materials such as eggs or shell.
When the water tank is empty or the water valve is closed a fine spray of air only is directed at the tip of the cutting bur. Many customers have commented that when using the carver on wood it is great having air lightly spray directly onto the carved surface at the tip of the bur as you cut into the material. This keeps the area clear of particles so that you can see the area more clearly.

4. Question: Why plastic?
Answer: The Turbo Carver is made of high impact plastic to give the user a comfortable, pen or pencil light, powerful tool. Because Turbo Carver is made from precision injection molded plastic so that it could be designed smaller and simpler. It has been said and demonstrated that simplicity is elegant. Small size also increases your visibility and improves access in hard to reach areas. Turbo Carver is not affected by moisture, a serious problem for metal instruments. Handpieces with aluminum handles are very susceptible to oxidation from moisture coming through the air lines. Oxidation is what sand paper is made from and it will destroy the bearings if it forms within the handpiece. For this reason, metal handpieces require an expensive moisture trap installed in the air line. Unfortunately, the moisture trap will not prevent water from getting into the handpiece while working with water as needed for hard materials.

5. Question - Can I use my water mist type tool on wood without water?
Answer - Yes. You simply empty the tank and blow out residual water in the lines. This gives you greater potential for your carving ability with or without water mist.

6. Question - Why would a "tankless" compressor be best? What are the advantages?
Answer - A tankless air compressor works very well for the Turbo Carver. Adding a tank would do nothing for the performance of the tool yet greatly increases the weight and size.
The Turbo Carver consumes enough air that a tank-type air compressor would turn off and on making a sudden burst of noise and drawing extra electricity as it switches on. The tankless compressor and electric foot control only work when you are using the carver. Maintenance is much easier with our tankless compressor. The tank on a tank-type compressor must be drained daily to remove the yucky sediment and condensation and oiled at regular Intervals. With our tankless compressor there is much less work and maintenance. You don't need to drain or oil it. You only need to wipe off the dust from time to time.
